The eras
The game is in early development: one valley, its creatures, seasons and village are playable in test builds. Each phase below is one step of the work, grouped into eras.
Paper, sketches and a second opinion
Before any code: concepting, paper sketches and brainstorming from 10 October, then a brainstorm against Claude and Codex on 27 October to see if they would reach the same game.
From a look-dev valley to a game
One valley around the sleeping Old Tree, built to match the concept art: felt-soft creatures, a living world and seasons. By the evening it had a core loop, keepers, regions, creature lives, expeditions and saves.
A valley that looks after itself
Elite creatures, a world map and phone controls, then a full day of economy and life: compost, kilns and lamps, creatures that take breaks and welcome newcomers, village buildings that grow, gatherings, and water that follows the seasons.
Projects, visitors and looks
Trees grow back and a caravan passes through. Creatures level up and heal the blighted patches, valley projects and salvage give a full store something to do, visitors drop by, the screens turn into pictures for touch, and the first optional looks arrive, with an optional shared account and cloud save.
Bruno, wishes and a gentler start
A dachshund joins the valley, creatures make wishes about places and moments, the valley's systems open one at a time, the text becomes plain sentences, and a second round of optional looks fills the shelves.
The Old Tree wakes, and friends
An intro film tells how Fallow was reaped, the Old Tree finally wakes and the valley walls come down, friends can visit each other's valleys, and the game speaks ten languages.
A website, gardens and a gift for early players
Second Spring got its own website with release news, the keeper learned to be less chatty if you like, and the valley gained a Japanese-style garden set, patterned lawns, remade creatures and a free set for its first players.
Weekly challenges, example valleys and water
A weekly challenge with boards to compare with friends, example valleys anyone can visit, streams, ponds and bridges, spires that crack and a pup that sings them down, and a graphics setting for every phone.

Concepting on paper
doneSecond Spring started away from the computer: concepting, paper sketches and brainstorming about the world, the creatures and how the valley should feel. The technical work only began two and a half weeks later.

Brainstorming against Claude and Codex
doneOn the day the technical work started, the ideas from paper were put to Claude and to Codex separately, to see whether they would come to the same conclusion about the game. The look-dev valley below was built the same day.

A valley that matches the concept art
doneSecond Spring is a cozy hex base-builder on Fallow, a world the Harrow has already reaped, where small creatures turn ash back into green one hex at a time. Work began with a look-dev demo: one valley around the sleeping Old Tree in a soft felt style, five creatures sculpted from scratch to match their concept sheets, and a living world where gusts roll through the grass and plants and water react to the creatures. A lighting pass added soft bloom, haze and a warm grade.

Fourteen species and a Harrow pup
doneNine more species joined from the bestiary, from the lanternslug to the burrbun. Every creature got blinking lids with random timing, eyes that glance around, sleep and look clips and a little spring in its step. The Harrow pup, the game's mascot, is cut from ivory and smoky quartz with a gold heart gem.

Heartseeds, a storehouse and the first game loop
doneThe core loop arrived: plant a heartseed on bare ash and its reach greens hex by hex, gatherers bring goods to the storehouse, and a ropewalk turns fibre into rope. Creatures find their way around buildings, trees and water. The interface can be skinned (Meadow, Grove and Clay) and uses the game's own clay icon set.

Landmarks, seasons and sound
doneA bigger map surrounds the valley, with landmarks to reclaim in three stages, from Shorn Peak and the Quiet Bell to Mirror Mere and the Stilled Sister. Seasons reach the whole valley: autumn leaves in Gust, snow on roofs and ice on the water in Hush. Music and ambience play under synthesised creature voices and chimes.

Keepers, regions, creature lives and expeditions
doneBy the evening it was a game: a title screen, a choice of eight keepers, a fresh first valley and a 13-step tutorial. The valley saves and rests while you're away. Three regions surround the Old Tree, each bringing new species, and creatures have needs, moods, friendships and life stages. Expeditions lead into the fog, with you at their head or on their own. The app icon is a crystal Harrow pup.

doneElite creatures got a readable aura each, and the hushbear's hum heals creatures the Harrow touched. A full-screen clay world map shows pins, cards and cloud fog, with drag and pinch. On phones, the map takes touch gestures and taps land on the tapped hex, and a Creatures overview shows everyone's needs, mood and what they're doing, with quick actions for the keeper.

Compost, bricks, treats and lamps
doneThe compost heap became the green engine that makes seeds grow faster. A kiln makes bricks and a treat kitchen makes treats, every creature's favourite food. Creatures work at night by a crystal lamp, a resonator speeds up the buildings around it, and a healing spring frees creatures the Harrow touched. A fully greened heartseed can grow into a sapling and then a young tree, reaching further each time.

Breaks, naps, welcomes and a Kite Day
doneCreatures look after themselves: they take breaks to eat and nap, go inside their homes for a day nap, and a Rest button slows the valley's pace. Newcomers get a welcome with confetti, and every upgrade gets a little show with scaffolding and a reveal. The Gathering plays out in the valley, starting with Kite Day, in front of a new meeting hall. The hall, the keeper's house and the trader's stall grow through three levels, and the storehouse grows into a barn with its goods piled by the door.

Water through the seasons, and veins in the ash
doneWater now follows the year: springs run strong in Bloom, the dry Gust makes seeds thirsty, and in Hush the springs ice over, so the valley stocks up before winter. Veins of fibre, berries, stone and water sleep in the ash and wake when the green reaches them; gathering sites wear out and regrow. When the Harrow visits, creatures run and hide, and a lookout tower sees it coming sooner. On phones the game keeps cool with a capped frame rate.

Trees grow back, and a caravan comes through
doneGreen hexes now grow trees back in stages, from a slim sapling to a full tree, and near the Old Tree a big ancient broadleaf; bare shrubs leaf out when their hex greens, and broadleaves turn orange in Gust. A young tree drops a glowing seed-cone now and then that the keeper turns into a new heartseed. Every few valley days a travelling trader pulls a cart in from the fog and camps overnight, with fair swaps, a gift and news of an undiscovered landmark. Gatherings gained a Lantern Night and a Harvest Supper, and every Gathering now closes with soft fireworks.

Paths, frost, butterflies and clearing the old world
doneCreatures wear desire paths into the grass, and the player can lay paths of their own. The old world's clutter of stones, scrap, dead trees and wrecks can be cleared. Hush brings icicles under the eaves, iced springs and an aurora on clear nights; Bloom brings butterflies to the flowers and drifting petals. Creatures sleep in their burrows and nests at night. Decor came in garden, lamp and seat sets, bunting strings across hexes, and lamps stand on the hex rims beside buildings and paths.

Creature levels and blighted patches
doneEach species levels up by eating its own good, glassfin water or frondling fibre, and wears a sprout at level 2 and a flower crown at level 3, where its quirk turns into a perk. Six blighted patches in the wastes won't green from a seed; a levelled creature of the right kind heals them hex by hex and wakes a rich spring, reed grove or dig pit, with rare finds and a hidden treasure. New babies now spread across species, and the Ring meter shows from the first crystal cut with a one-time warning.

Valley projects, salvage and glass gardens
doneA full store now has somewhere to go: three valley projects built in stages, a waterwheel that keeps springs flowing through the Hush, a warm pool for better naps and a bandstand where Gatherings play. Gatherers with nothing left to gather come and help build. The trader's stall buys spare goods for coins, slowly. Salvage, the old world's parts, comes from clearing wrecks and trips; with crystal it builds relays out by far work and glass gardens that green the ash around them without a heartseed.

Rare visitors, daily finds and a return postcard
doneNine named visitors, each a valley species in its own coat, walk in from the fog for something the valley has, flowers, bunting or a finished bandstand, stay a while and leave a gift where they sat; the Journal keeps a page of who came. Up to three daily finds lie in the grass each day. Coming back after a while shows a postcard: a snapshot of the valley as it is now with what grew while you were away, and phones can now get a friendly note when something good happens.

Pictures instead of text, made for touch
doneThe screens were reworked for phones. Info cards use badges, meters and portraits instead of sentences, and the build sheet became five picture shelves with a card for every piece, rendered from the game itself. Tapping a meadow shows a row of buildings that fit that hex. You can swipe rows, drag sheets away and hold for a name, every tap answers, and Undo takes back what was just put down. Every panel stays inside the screen, even on narrow phones, and the camera follows what you do without getting in the way.

doneSigning in is optional: an e-mail code with the shared Cantorite account saves the valley to the cloud, and the sign-in screen links to the privacy policy. The first looks arrived, all of them optional and none of them changing how the game plays: bunting colours, roof paint and path styles earned with petals, a First Steps track and species tracks of looks for creatures and the valley, and a free Season Ribbon that rewards play with decor and coats through each season. A small Valley Store sells extra looks; the game itself stays fully free to play.

Wishes, favourite gifts and photos
doneCreatures no longer wish for piles of goods. They wish for flowers, a seat or a lamp near their favourite spot, a visit or a chat, and every granted wish becomes a line in the valley's stories. After each Gathering, Valley News shows the week in pictures. Each creature has a secret favourite good to give as a gift, and friendship earns it a nap spot and a story of its own. A photo mode saves pictures of the valley, one baby in twenty is born in a rare colour, and a keepsake shelf stands in the keeper's house. Comforts warn gently before they run out, green now spreads under dead trees and wrecks, two new blighted zones appeared, and trodden paths can be upgraded to stepping stones and cobbles.

One new thing at a time, in plain sentences
doneAfter the tutorial, the valley's other parts open one by one, each with a single picture tip, and the Journal's first page shows the best things to do next. All in-game text was rewritten as plain, full sentences. Goals sit behind a star button and show green progress as a bar, the creatures list opens on who needs you, and a long press on a build card shows what it is before you build. The keeper runs to every errand with the camera following, carriers show what they carry, and candles light occupied windows at night. The title now holds three named valleys, each saved and synced on its own, and Settings has a way to report a problem.

An intro film: how Fallow was reaped
doneThe game now opens with a short film before the first valley: the green valley long ago, the Directorate and the Umbra fighting over the crystal, every cut ringing louder, the Harrow breaking through the clouds and reaping everything to ash, the Old Tree falling asleep, and one warm heartseed that a keeper finds. It plays as a paper theatre, with painted paper stages and the game's own creatures and machines acting as puppets, slowed down to leave room for a narrator.

The Old Tree wakes, the walls come down
doneWhen the third region is greened, the Old Tree wakes. The valley holds a one-off wake festival with lanterns, petals and fireworks, the Tree speaks for the first time, and its great seed falls beside it. Once the keeper picks the seed up, the valley wall sinks into six green passes, each with a root arch and a sleeping sister tree beyond, and the great seed grows a second valley to tend.

doneSigned-in players can add friends by a friend code and visit their valleys. A visit is look-only: you can wander around and leave a small gift, but nothing in their valley changes. Photo mode can send a photo to a friend as a postcard with a clay stamp. There is no chat and no search. Neighbours, valleys around yours that you can visit once the walls are down, are built and wait behind a switch; opening your own valleys to strangers stays off unless you turn it on.

A calmer start
doneThe tutorial got calmer: fewer keeper lines with a breath between them, less camera movement, and green that spreads much faster while you learn. The hex that greens next wears a ring, and a tap on ash, a vein or clutter picks it to green first; green now spreads under the Harrow's crystal spires too. The keeper and the pup sleep at home at night, and new creatures wait until their new home is built before moving in. Tapping the keeper opens a card of their own, and a hanger badge on any card dresses that keeper or creature straight away.

Streams, ponds, bridges and places to meet
doneOrnamental water is laid like a path, streams run over a pebble lip into a pond, and walkers cross only over bridges, with a free plank bridge and other free bridge styles. Fences run along hex edges, and there is a wash line, a jetty with a rowboat and nests with eggs; small ornaments sit on a hex corner and gateways across an edge so paths run through them. Creatures now soak in the bathhouse and the healing spring, dance at the bandstand and meet at the hall. House looks fit their hex in a size you pick, and the keeper clears clutter out of the way before a build goes up.

Gatherers can be given a patch of their own to tend, so fibre and berries no longer run short, and the Old Tree grows a little with every green step. Rests while you are away give goods at a gentler pace than live play.

A new check taps every button on every screen to find ones that did nothing. Phones show a loader while the game starts, the download shrank again, fences can be drawn in long lines along hex edges, and tapping a heartseed outlines its reach and every other seed's.

How the art is made
doneA look behind the creatures and buildings: every model starts as an AI-made concept, then takes one of two routes. Creatures and keepers go through an image-to-3D service and land on one shared skeleton with the same clips; homes, trees, landmarks, the Harrow and every outfit are built entirely in code. The diagram and four examples, from concept to the valley, are on their own page: How the art is made.

Rigforge, a third art route
doneRigging creatures by hand was slow, so we built Rigforge: our own desktop-style app that takes a concept image or a text prompt and gives back an animated, game-ready model, all on our own GPU. FLUX draws the concept, TRELLIS makes the mesh, UniRig rigs it (four legs, six legs, wings and tails too) and Claude checks and fixes the rig. It sits next to the image-to-3D route and the models built in code. A first test ran six creatures through it, about three minutes from prompt to rigged model. It starts in small steps so the page stays responsive, prepares its graphics in the background behind a single loading bar, and its colours were matched to the phone version. On a computer it keeps the phone-sized interface, with the mouse wheel zooming to the pointer and a middle-drag turning the valley.

More fixes from blind play, and workshops you can pause
doneMore rounds of play by someone new to the game brought more fixes: refused builds and seeds say why, grey hexes are marked, taps land where they are aimed, ready seeds glint, and the first Harrow visit is introduced properly. Workshops can now be paused, the suggested trip party never takes a valley's only gardener or digger, grown valleys get a list of their own, and example valleys show as cards on the Friends page. Lines that were still half in English were translated.

Calmer pop-ups and berry trees
doneAnother round of playtest fixes: cards that come up by themselves now wait until no other card is open and no finger is down, so nothing jumps under a tap. Workshops leave goods for others, berry trees can be planted, taps say what they hit, and the welcome-back card keeps its wording.

Wild patches, echoes and a crossbloom garden
doneA big day for the valley. Painted lawn now grows into meadow and then into wild ground, with soft edges, ferns, glowing caps and drifting motes, and a wild brush lets you grow many hexes wild (or tidy them) at once. Wonders can appear in the wilds: an old felt tree, a giant toadstool, a fairy ring and tall standing stones. Under the ash, echoes show the ghost of a building that once stood there; build it again the same way for a bonus. A crossbloom garden lets flower beds cross overnight into 27 kinds, each with a page in the Flora Book. The Harrow now wanders by now and then, greying only bare lawn, and the morning round shows what happened overnight on the map, with one button to walk to it. Fences are drawn by holding and dragging, landmarks get themed scenery around them, and close always goes back to the screen you came from.

Little ones, night lights and creatures that learn on the job
doneCreatures now learn on the job: every minute of work counts toward their next level, so the higher levels come much sooner. Babies are little ones that grow up over real days: play with each once a day with a snack, a cuddle or a chase, and after three plays it grows up greedy, sleepy or brave, depending on the play it had most, and joins the Baby book. They are never sad and never leave. Street lamps, twin lamps and lantern posts now keep the work going on the hexes around them at night, for one shared crystal cost. The Harrow's crystals out in the frontier became spires you can tap to cut or sing down, so their hexes green too, and growing trees no longer takes a heartseed slot.
